A log wall looks simple — logs stacked on logs — but a well-built one is a small system of parts working together to stay tight, shed water, and move as the wood changes over time. Understanding those parts tells you the difference between a wall that lasts a century and one that leaks by its third winter.
The logs and their coped fit
The logs are the structure, the insulation, and the finish all at once. What makes them weathertight is the cope (or lateral groove) — the long concave channel cut along the underside of each log so it saddles over the rounded top of the log below. A properly scribed cope hugs its lower log along the entire length, leaving only a thin, controlled gap for sealant rather than open daylight.
The components that seal and fasten
Inside and around that coped joint sits the hardware and sealing system.
- Sealant tape and gaskets: Closed-cell foam tape or wool/foam gaskets run inside the lateral groove between courses, forming the primary air and water seal hidden within the joint.
- Chinking: On styles with a visible gap between logs, chinking — a flexible, elastomeric sealant — bridges that gap on the exterior and interior. Modern chinking stretches and compresses with the logs instead of cracking like old mortar.
- Fasteners: Courses are drawn down and held with through-bolts, lag screws, or purpose-made log-home screws (long structural screws designed to bite deep and keep the stack tight as it settles). Spacing and pattern are engineered, not guessed.
- Splines and dowels: At window and door openings, a vertical spline set into a routed slot — or hardwood dowels between courses — keeps the cut log ends aligned and lets them slide vertically as the wall settles, instead of bowing out.
The settling space
Green or even kiln-dried logs lose moisture and compress at the joints, so a log wall shrinks in height over the first few years. To accommodate this, builders leave a deliberate settling space — typically a gap above every window, door, and framed partition, hidden behind trim. How the wall sheds water
Round logs are natural drip edges, but detailing makes them work. The exterior face is shaped or kerfed so water runs off rather than wicking into the joint. Generous roof overhangs keep most rain off the walls entirely. The lateral groove is cut so the seal sits inboard of any water path, and exposed end grain — the thirstiest part of a log — is kept up off grade and protected by finish. Good water management, far more than wood species, decides how long a log wall lives.
