Corner Joinery Explained

Corners are where a log home shows its craftsmanship and earns its weathertightness. Every corner system has to lock the walls together, resist racking, and shed water at the most exposed point of the building. Here are the four you’ll encounter and how they differ.

The four main corner systems

Corner joinery styles. How logs interlock at the corners — each a structural and visual signature.

Each style has a distinct look and a distinct set of tradeoffs.

  • Saddle notch: The classic round-log handcrafted corner. A curved notch is cut into the underside of each log so it cradles the perpendicular log crossing beneath it, with the log ends projecting past the corner. It interlocks tightly, sheds water well because the notch faces down, and gives the iconic protruding-log look. It is also the most skill-intensive to cut.
  • Dovetail: Used with squared (hewn) logs. Each log end is cut to an angled, flaring dovetail that interlocks with its neighbour and slopes outward to drain water. Flush corners, a tidy and historic appearance, no projecting ends. Cutting accurate compound dovetails takes precision.
  • Butt-and-pass: One log butts into the side of the perpendicular log, which passes by and projects beyond. Simple and forgiving to build — popular with owner-builders — but it relies heavily on long spikes or pins for strength and needs careful sealing where the butted end meets the passing log.
  • Corner-post: A vertical post is set at each corner with grooves routed into it; horizontal logs land their cut ends into those grooves. Common with milled and post-and-beam-influenced systems. It is clean and easy to seal, allows shorter wall logs, but reads as more engineered than traditional.

Structural and weathering tradeoffs

Saddle notches and dovetails are self-locking — the geometry itself resists the walls pulling apart — and both are shaped to drain. Butt-and-pass and corner-post systems lean more on fasteners or hardware for that lock, so detailing matters more. For weathering, downward-facing or outward-sloping joints (saddle notch, dovetail) beat any joint that can trap water. Whatever the system, end grain at corners must be sealed and kept clear of splashback.

Scribing and cutting a saddle notch by hand

This is the heart of handcrafted work — the technique Pioneer Log Homes’ builders perform on every round-log corner.

  1. Roll the upper log into position across the two support logs below it and shim it level and steady.
  2. Set the log scriber to the gap distance, keeping its bubble level true so the points stay vertical.
  3. Trace both sides of the lower log’s curve onto the upper log where they cross, marking the notch outline on each face.
  4. Roll the upper log over so the marked underside faces up.
  5. Saw a series of relief kerfs across the marked notch area down to, but not past, the scribe lines.
  6. Chisel and gouge out the waste between kerfs, working to the lines to form the curved saddle.
  7. Roll the log back, test the seat, and pare high spots until the notch beds fully onto the lower log with no rock or gap.
